  • apply the mechanics of the graphic short story
  • demonstrate the art of sequential design
  • employ personal illustration and design skills
  • employ computer skills in comic design

  • employ all the outcomes expected for the undergraduate in comic book illustration
  • investigate themes in book design
  • implement the duties of assistant editor and administrator of the class comic book
  • demonstrate research skills
  • demonstrate knowledge in the artistic and historical aspects of the comic book

Assignments for ARTA 4217 (undergraduates)

Formulate a story concept

  • Write a short story
  • Write one paragraph  discussing the attributes of all your characters
  • Gather source materials

Create splash page, a graphic summary of story

  • Create storyboard
  • Use gestural sketches
  • Develop sequential flow
  • Insert dialogue

Create a five-page finished comic

  • Draw a color splash page
  • Write finish dialogue with word balloons

Present comic book to class

  • Use Power Point
  • Respond to class critique
  • Submit hi-res TIFF files
